Frequently Asked Questions About Electrolysis
How does electrolysis work?
A small metal probe is inserted into the hair follicle, next to the hair. Small amounts of electrical current are delivered to the probe by an electronic device called an epilator. The electric current destroys the hair root by chemical action, through the galvanic method of electrolysis. There are 3 methods of electrolysis: galvanic, thermolysis, and blend electrolysis. Electrology Clinic uses the galvanic method of electrolysis.
How does galvanic electrolysis use a chemical action to destroy unwanted hair?
Galvanic electrolysis is the oldest method of electrolysis. The direct current converts normal body salt and water in the hair follicle into a compound that can destroy the dermal papilla, the part of the hair follicle that contains blood and nerves and feeds the growing hair. The chemical is produced only in the hair follicle and does not affect any other areas. Several probes can be used simultaneously during this process.
What areas of the body can be treated?
Almost any part of the body can be treated for unwanted hair. Some common areas include the hairline, eyebrows, cheeks, sideburn area, upper and lower lip, chin, throat, neck, breasts, stomach, bikini line, feet and toes, and underarms. Please contact her if you have questions about additional areas that may require electrolysis.
Are there any side effects?
Electrolysis has been practiced since 1875 and is a very safe procedure. There are no known side effects or serious complications, according to medical literature on the procedure. However, there is a short healing phase following treatment. You may notice some slight redness, swelling, or minor scabbing of the skin, which is only temporary.
Are there any other methods of hair removal as effective as electrolysis?
No. There is no reputable scientific evidence that shows any other hair removal method as being as safe, effective, and permanent as electrolysis.
Is electrolysis painful?
During most treatments, you will notice a sensation, which has been variously described as a "slight heat," "tingling" or "stinging" feeling. Your electrologist is trained to work within your comfort tolerance, so don't hesitate to let her know what you are feeling.
How long does it take to permanently remove the hair?
A series of treatments will be needed over a period of time, which varies from person to person and is dependent on many factors. Some hairs will be permanently removed after the first treatment, while others will require additional treatments to achieve permanency.
How should I choose an electrologist?
Use the same care as you would in selecting any other health care professional. An electrologist should be certified or licensed by the State Medical Board.
